May 25 th is European Thyroid Day
Rome, 1965, 25th of May: The Thyroid Conference conducted in this great city 44 years ago constituted an unprecedented event in the history of European Thyroidology.
Not only was it distinguished by its outstanding scientific program and the superbness of Italian hospitality but, crucially, it was in this setting that the concept for the
creation of the European Thyroid Association (ETA) was born. This was the moment that the spirit of the ETA had its genesis,
a spirit linking us all in a great ‘family of aspiration and inspiration’ in our striving for ever deeper insight into and treatment of thyroid disease.
In the decades that followed, the ETA has grown into one of the leading thyroid associations of the world, providing excellence in clinical and experimental thyroidology,
thus ensuring state-of-the-art treatment of millions of patients by our many dedicated ETA members. Today, that spirit brought forth in Rome so many years ago is more vibrant than ever.
In a world that draws constantly closer together, we likewise keenly feel our global fellowship not only within European Thyroidology but in World Thyroidology.
Our standing as an international scientific community equips us to better assist and be assisted by our colleagues all over the world in the resolution of vital issues and in aiding people
who are suffering from thyroid disease. The longstanding enthusiasm demonstrated by all our members has truly been a driving force of the spirit of the ETA
and it is due to this spirit that we have felt it our duty to celebrate this particular day, the 25th of May. To mark this most significant day, we are inviting people from all parts
of the world who share a commitment to Thyroidology, primarily all our patients, but also our sister associations around the globe, our partners, the thyroid patients’ organizations,
in fact, each and every person who feels intimately connected with Thyroid Research and Clinical Praxis, to commemorate this day.
On the occasion of European Thyroid Day, the Public Affairs Board of the ETA has produced a logo with the aim of increasing visibility and invoking the
active participation of all who are involved in clinical and experimental thyroidology, sure of their continued commitment and dedication to all our thyroid patients.
We sincerely hope that the celebration of this special day will further stimulate both political and public interest in thyroid disease, the most common endocrine disease worldwide, while simultaneously promoting the ETA.
